I don’t know if I have really mentioned my nails situation to you before but I will confess… I used to be a biter. It’s been a while since I managed to – for the most part – break the habit, but I still have issues with chewing the nail and skin (gross I know) when I am particularly stressed… so generally March to July with my exams.
I really don’t like this though, I get really conscious of how this makes my hands look, when I shake hands with someone new or I am sat doing something and I look at my hands, it isn’t a great feeling. So I decided that this year is a great time for me to try and turn this around. I have sort of mentioned before that I have started a new job and basically I am on a 1 year industrial placement before my final year of university to complete my Masters. This means NO EXAMS THIS YEAR!!! So hopefully as I won’t be dealing with the specific stress that makes me chew for well over a year, I have plenty of time to try and strengthen my nails and stop myself from doing it when exam season does come back round.
I made this decision about a month ago and so far I am really happy with how it has been going. Before I started using products to help this, I would have to keep my nails really short with barely any tip or they would break because they were way too brittle. Now I am so happy with the progress my nails are making I want to share it with you and what I have been using to improve the condition. I should have probably done some before photos, but I wasn’t thinking about it properly then…
Product wise, I chose the BarryM Cosmetics nail strengthening products as I have always been really impressed with the polishes and wanted to see how these would fair too. And I have to say I was not disappointed!
BarryM Super Mani 7 in 1 Treatment
This little purple liquid of goodness is a multitasking hero claiming to strengthen, nourish, encourage growth, promote shine, hydrate, smooth and protect. I like to apply this to my nails first to let the nourishing and hydrating elements really sink in and try to do my nails some good. It must be doing something!
BarryM Mani Mask in Bashful
This claims to camouflage, colour and condition. I mostly use this for the camouflage element as I don’t tend to choose coloured nail varnish because it always chips and doesn’t help the state of my hands, but the semi-transparent and semi-matte finish of this helps to smooth out the look of my nails without completely changing the colour. It’s a very subtle finish that I really like, it basically masks any patchiness but lets some of the french manicure look show.
BarryM Iron Mani Nail Hardener
I use this to finish and protect my nails, it feels a bit thicker than the Super Mani and I feel like it does a better job of both adding strength to my nails to stop them breaking from being too brittle and also stopping the mani mask from chipping.
I remove and reapply these about twice a week, usually on a Sunday and Wednesday and enjoy a little manicure with the assistance of a few other products…
Glass Nail File
I’m not sure where this specific nail file is from but they can be brought in lots of different places. I personally prefer glass files as I feel like it files the nail quickly and doesn’t wear out the way emery boards do as well as leaving a good finish.
Sally Hansen Vitamin E Nail and Cuticle Oil
This is a fairly self-explanatory product, I use this to help condition and nourish my nails as the 7 in 1 treatment wouldn’t be enough. I like to apply this every night before I go to bed and it really make a difference.
I don’t use this all the time, but if I find myself nibbling, I apply it and it’s safe to say I stop immediately. This stuff tastes disgusting, as is the point and makes a great deterrent for biting. I wouldn’t apply this before eating food held with your fingers though as you will definitely notice it!
Overall this combination of products has really helped my nails to grow, I haven’t had one break since I started using it which, being a month ago, is incredible!
When I started my nail mission, I made myself a promise. If I can go until December keeping my nails growing and in a good condition, I am going to invest in some Jamberry Nail Wraps. I first came across these over a year ago and was devastated when I realised they were only in America, but that’s all changed as they are now in available in the UK! Looking at the state of my nails I didn’t want to get some straight away as I couldn’t do them justice, however, if I can keep this going, I feel like my nails finally will and I want to make the most of it! Hopefully with Christmas designs!
Either way I will keep you updated on the progress, I would love to know your opinion of the products I am using and of any others you think I should try, let me know in the comments!
