Ok, so in terms of how I would normally buy make-up, I went a little bit crazy… normally I buy little bits here or there so I wouldn’t really be able to consider anything a haul, but this weekend has been a little bit different.
I actually purchased the Essence products over a couple of days. I went into Wilko and had a look around the make-up, swatching as I went, and decided that for the price, the products did seem good, so I decided to pick up a couple of lipsticks and a blush.
The lipsticks that I picked up on this go were:
01 Coral Calling – this is a gorgeous bright pink-coral colour. I wouldn’t normally pick up a colour like this however, for £2.30, I decided that I would be adventurous, and I am so glad I did! Personally, I love this colour on myself and I do think it makes a wonderful colour to brighten up my make-up for spring.
06 Barely There – In my opinion, this is a nude that is a slightly darker my-lips-but-better lipstick which does tend to be a go to for me, however, the texture of the ones that I have are a lot more buttery and contain shimmers, so I decided, for the price, it would be nice to have something like this.
07 Natural Beauty – This is a definite my-lips-but-better shade (I said it was a go to). I decided to get this alongside 06 because it is a bit lighter and I think it makes a nice neutral shade for a no-make up, make up day.
These lipsticks feel nice on my lips and are very pigmented, however, they don’t really last very long. I didn’t mind this too much as they were only £2.30 each so are incredibly affordable. I think these are a perfect way to try out a colour that you are unsure about, then, once you know you like it, you can invest in a longer lasting, inevitably more expensive, version.
I also picked up a blush in the shade 10 Adorable. I have been using this for the past few days and really loving it. So far my blush collection is very limited, I have a couple of sleek blushes in Rose Gold and Flushed, but that is it. I decided that I wanted a nice, pretty pink shade for the spring which doesn’t have too much shimmer and this definitely fits. It is a nice soft powder that can be built up or worn subtly.
After how impressed I was with these, I had to go back yesterday and pick up more. This time I got another lipstick and another blush. I really wanted to get the Soo Glow! Cream to powder highlighter, but I couldn’t find it in either store that I have been to recently but never mind, I will find it eventually!
The lipstick I picked up was 13 Love Me – this is a really nice, perfect for spring, pink shade. It is pinker than 07 but more subtle than 01 and I really like it.
The blush was 80 Autumn Peach which is a type of shade that I don’t already own (not that that is a difficult with my tiny collection… can it even be called a collection?) so I decided to get it to try, especially as the blushes are only £2.50. Having swatched it, I don’t really think it will suit my skin tone, and it is definitely a summer shade but heyho. In the pan, I can’t tell if there is a little bit of gold shimmer in it or not, but when I swatched, this was more visible but still not overpowering.
I actually only went in to pick up a new primer. I have been using a mini Benefit Porefessional, I like the texture of this, especially under the Bare Minerals Original Foundation, however, I did not think it was worth the £24.50 price tag. So of course, I went on a dupe hunt. I had my eye on two primers, Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Lightweight Primer and L’Oreal Paris Infallible Mattifying Base Primer. To decide, I put a little bit of one on the back of one hand and the other on the other hand. When I rubbed both in, the Maybelline Primer felt more greasy than the L’Oréal, and I wasn’t keen on this so I decided on the L’Oreal Primer. Once I have given this a good go I will do a proper comparison to the Porefessional.
I of course couldn’t resist the 3 for 2 offer so spent some time browsing. I decided to get another Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner. I already have this in 07 Black Chrome which has little silver sparkles. I haven’t rally used this a great deal because of the sparkles (I obviously don’t go out in the evenings enough) but I do really like the texture and how well/easily it applies, much more so than the similar Rimmel London Gel Eyeliner which I have in 002 Brown. As I didn’t have a plain black, I decided to get one (01 Black) which I am hoping will apply as nicely as the Black Chome, but I am still yet to try this out. I have also been considering getting a Maybelline gel eyeliner in brow to do a proper comparison with the Rimmel London version. What do you think?
Anyway, enough on that little eyeliner tangent… for my final product, I went in search of a Cuticle Oil. I decided on the Sally Hansen Vitamin E Nail and Cuticle Oil. I wanted to get this because my nails are atrocious. I won’t lie, I did used to bite them and I do still chew on them occasionally, and this has left them really brittle and not looking so great. On top of this, one of my nails was badly affected by my dermatitis and hasn’t fully recovered so it is even more brittle and ridged than the rest. I wanted to get this oil as my first step to improving the state of my hands, I am fed up of them looking awful so, now my face is eczema (and blemish – mostly) free, I am going to move on to my hands and feet. I might do a proper post on this once I have found a routine.
Finally, I picked up 3 of the Rimmel London Apocalips products, two of the Lip Lacquers and a Lip Velvet (basically a matte version).
The lip lacquers that I picked up were:
101 Celestial – This is a beautiful rose pink that I have been lusting over for ages now. I really love the shade for this lovely spring time of year and I do think it is very complementary to my skin tone.
303 Apocaliptic – this was a very bold, adventurous choice for me which is rather unusual. As I said above, I normally go for the neutrals, however this is fabulous bold fuchsia and I have to say – I love it. I wore it yesterday and posted the photo below on Instagram because I loved it so much, it thinks, surprisingly, this will get a LOT of use. When I got this, even Ben was unsure, but once I put it on he said that he loved it too.
The Lip Velvet shade that got was 505 Burning Lava. This is a wonderful deep red, the sort of colour I want to be brave enough to wear. I haven’t tried this on yet, but I plan on wearing it to the cinema with Ben this evening, probably with the new eyeliner too, so keep an eye on my Instagram around 4pm (GMT) because I will probably post a picture of it.
Oh I did also pick up some baby oil in Wilko’s in the hope it will help my poor, dry patchy legs! I am going to try using it when shaving as all foams and gels have been very drying and don’t help my legs in any way.
So that was my haul! I really enjoyed making this post and I do apologise for my ramblings, I do like a good make up chat and love to read yours too! Let me know in the comments if you think I should have been more concise or split this into two posts, or even if you just loved it as it was. I would also love to hear all of your opinions of the products that I purchased as so far these are just my first impressions!
Thanks so much for reading my entirely too long post!
